What does Section 69 of the BNS say?

The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS) criminalizes engaging in sexual intercourse under false promises of marriage, promotion, employment, or by concealing one’s identity. Section 69 of BNS, specifically handles instances where a man lures women into sexual relationships by concealing his identity or by making a false promise to marry later or a false promise of promotion or employment.

According to Section 69, if a promise to marry is made with no intention of following through and a sexual relationship is formed, a person may face up to 10 years of imprisonment and a fine.
